This portrait is the first thing I saw when I opened Instagram today and I knew I had to write about it right away. I have five of six other blog posts lined up, but Jane C Thom and Natasha Lyonne take precedence.
Natasha Lyonne is a gift to humanity. Her big red hair, her scruffy voice, her acting chops. I mean: Russian Doll, Orange is the New Black, But I’m a Cheerleader, Slums of Beverly Hills, are all classics because of Lyonne and her incredible presence.
Doing portrait work isn’t as simple as doing a realistic representation of your subject, you also have to capture their essence, there je-ne-sais-quoi that makes them who they are.
I think that embroidery portrait artist Jane C Thom (a.k.a. @jaygel_threads on Instragram) has managed to do just that. All of her portraits capture the person’s likeness and presence to perfection. Honestly, I’m constantly marvelled by Jane’s work. One of these days, I’m going to have to interview her about her art process. In the meantime, feast your eyes on these.
